A friend of mine had some business partners in town and wanted a good place to take them that they would most likely not find on their own. He wanted Italian or Seafood, good Vino, in a cool hip place, downtown, and fairly priced. I thought about it and Emporio on Mott popped into my head (Of note you can make reservation 7pm and before, afterwards its walk in only and fills up fairly quickly). When you first enter up front it looks like a cute little trattoria with wooden tables and chairs with an a L shaped bar. It’s a great place to get a drink to start the night before you head into Emporio’s rather large and spacious back dining room with tables for 2,4, and large groups.
My new friends ordered up some more wine while I got a Negroni and we started ogling the menu. For appetisers we ordered up the Crudo(Italian Sushi) special that consisted of Wild Jumbo Fluke,Fennel,Crab Apple, and Basil and an order of mixed, marinated olives. The olives were great especially with the fennel…but the Crudo’s combination of flavors, texture and freshness of the fish made it something to remember.
For our entrees two of us ordered up the Risotto with Shrimp and Langostino special which was amazing, my bud the Grass Fed Bavette Steak(I’ve had this before and it’s a delicious cut of meat) cooked perfectly as ordered with roasted Sunchokes and Radicchio, and my Crudo sharing friend loved that so much she ordered up the Yellowfin Tuna TarTare w/Avocado in a tomato olive oil broth with jalapeno crisps… which was fairly outrageous and the Brussels sprouts with cauliflower and mullet bottarga. We enhanced our meal with a bottle of the Valpolicella to share. It was full bodied with hints of dark cherries.
Though fairly satiated the desert menu just looked too good so we ordered up to share the Affogato,a Nutella Calzone, and the Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Salted Caramel ice cream and…I’m not yet…a dollop of caramel. You know how sometimes menu items read better then they turn out….well these turned out even better then they read. If you’re looking for great food, with great service in a hip happening spot…add Emporio to your “Go To” list…
Emporio is located at 231 Mott Street
