Peter Max at Pop Midtown
What is it about Marilyn Monroe* that so captivates us…so much so that it even brought Peter Max back into the proverbial limelight to have his first gallery showing in 20 years?  His new show consists primarily of multicolored Mixed Media pieces using photo’s of Marilyn Monroe taken by Milton Greene and surrounded by splashes of bright intense colors . The splashes of color look like bursts of emotion emanating from the works.

Throughout the show I couldn’t help but notice what a great selection of music was playing, two songs really struck a chord so to speak Those being Ruby Tuesday which I could not get over how much it seemed as if it were written about her and 20th Century Fox, since of course she is the original. Turns out it was Peter’s personal DJ who put together the mix. As for the crowd, as usual at one of Jeff Jaffe’s events it was colorful, eclectic and this one in particular, a rather upscale well heeled crowd…that even included running into a cute girl from one of my painting  classes. I’ll let the pictures below tell the rest of the story…one can describe a rainbow, but you really need to see one for yourself for the full impact.

*The answer to that question I cannot put into words, but more importantly I think the answer lies in the fact that half a century later she still has such an impact on our Pop culture that her image is frequently used by virtually every major Pop Artist.
